Esophageal Cancer

What is esophageal cancer?

Esophageal cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the esophagus. The esophagus is a muscular tube used to transport swallowed food from the mouth to the stomach. Esophageal cancer usually occurs in the lower part of the esophagus and is more common in later ages. Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, gastric reflux, obesity and some genetic factors can increase the risk of esophageal cancer.

Esophageal cancer, symptoms usually appear in the late stages. Difficulty swallowing, chest pain, indigestion, weight loss, cough, and bloody vomiting are the most common symptoms. Because these symptoms can also be a symptom of many other diseases, you may need to undergo tests recommended by your doctor to diagnose esophageal cancer. These tests may include endoscopy, biopsy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and positron emission tomography (PET).

Treatment for esophageal cancer may vary depending on the extent of the cancer, its type, location, and the patient’s overall health. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy. Treatment methods are often used together. Esophageal cancer detected early is better treatable and has a better prognosis. Therefore, it is recommended that people at risk of esophageal cancer undergo regular screening tests.

Surgical treatment is a method often used in the treatment of esophageal cancer. In this method, part or all of the esophagus can be removed to remove cancerous tissue. After surgical intervention, the esophagus is joined with the stomach, and this procedure is called esophagoduodenostomy.
